If you have never seen a miniature horse before, then you are in for one of the most pleasant surprises of your life! These adorable cousins of the standard size horse are the result of generations of selective breeding in Europe, South America and most recently North America.
Miniature horses are very popular with horse lovers of all ages. They can be trained to do the same things as a big horse including driving, jumping and obstacles. They require the same basic care as a full size horse, but need far less feed and pasture. Miniatures are well suited for older people and children, and work especially well with the handicapped.
A miniature horse is a recognized breed of horse which does not exceed 34 inches when measured at the withers (the last hair of the mane). Today, a number of registries record the pedigrees of these horses.
The oldest breed of miniature horses is the Falabella , which originated in Argentina, where the Falabella family began selectively breeding small horses in the 1860's. Only small South American horses were used and no pony blood was ever introduced. Thus the Falabella breed is noted for its excellent conformation, intelligence and manner. The Guiness Book of Records refers to the Falabella as the smallest breed of horses in the world.
